ast month the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC) hosted its fifth annual "Defense & Oceans Day" in Newport, an event designed to provide a public forum for leaders from all corners of the Rhode Island subsea industry to step-up to discuss the issues and drivers of this industry. As most of you already know, Rhode Island the "Ocean State" is intimately connected to the ocean, and within the confines of this physically small state resides an enormous wealth of information, expertise and commerce surrounding the study, the conservation and the business of everything under and around its waters. Political, Naval, Commercial and Academia leaders abound on this day, with RADM Phil Wisecup, President, Naval War College; Dr. Robert Ballard, URI Center for Ocean Exploration and Archeological Oceanography; and Donald McCormack, Technical Director, Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) headlining the event. The exact contents of the discussion, which are provided in more detail starting on page 8, are less important for this space than the overriding theme of the day, which was Rhode Island's and in fact this entire industry's continual push for advanced technologies which provide to the world more information and answers on the resources that lie beneath our waters. In this, our "Future Tech" edition, we examine recent technological developments that are designed to do just that. The list is hardly comprehensive or complete, rather a glimpse at some of the ongoing work from individuals and institutions that are geared toward enhancing the understanding of our subsea world, which is the bulk of our planet. One `technology' that is not covered in this edition, but has been covered in great detail in previous editions, is the June 1, 2009 official opening of URI's Inner Space Center, the brainchild of URI's Robert Ballard, a unique facility designed to advance the practice of telepresence technology, essentially allowing researcher's to study the ocean from shore with the use of satellite and internet technology. As you peruse this edition, feel free to drop a note to us regarding technologies or developments you feel worthy of profiling in our pages, as we are always on the look-out for a compelling story to share with our global community of subscribers.
