Major project responsibilities within this arena include design of an autonomous moored profiling system, surface drifting platforms, and mooring systems. Design responsibilities include overall project development and management, design analysis, detailed mechanical design tasks and construction management duties. Specific work tasks may include design of oceanographic sampling platforms from concept to a detailed design level, hydrodynamic modeling of submerged and surface drifting platforms, structural analysis and design, assist in field testing of platforms, writing reports, and a variety of other ocean engineering project responsibilities. The position requires active participation in field experiments deploying and recovering oceanographic platforms from research vessels, and requires frequent physical exertion. Candidates with demonstrated at-sea experience in this arena are highly desirable. Ability to think and write clearly and to learn new skills are important assets for this position. A strong working knowledge of MS Office Software and expertise in 3-D CAD (i.e. Autocad or SolidWorks) is required. Experience with processing and modeling software (i.e. Matlab, COMSOL) are desirable skills. An ideal candidate would have an MS in Ocean Engineering or Oceanography, a BS in Mechanical or Civil Engineering or Oceanography and some relevant work experience in ocean industry or an academic research setting.
