applications. The principle of operation is similar to expendable probes, except that the Underway CTD is recovered after each deployment. Typically, profiles are made to over 500 m at a ship speed of 10 knots. At slower ship speeds, profiles to over 1100m have been obtained. Shallower profiles may be made at ship speeds up to 20 knots.

Rapp Hydema's New ROV Winch
Rapp Hydema launched a new generation of ROV winches with Active Heave Compensation intended for operations in extreme conditions such as ultra deep waters operations and Arctic areas. The company has booked orders from ROV contractors and at present, two units are being installed and another six are in pro7.5 kg. They are ideal for short duration dives in shallow water for tasks such as evidence retrieval or the preliminary inspection of a boat's hull. They can also be used to enable emergency crew escapes following, for example, helicopter immersion. The Micro-B system is the smallest model in the Microdive range from Mini B Ltd, Essex, England.

Turner Designs Debuts Handheld Datalogger
Turner Designs offers the DataBank, a universal Handheld Datalogger that is designed to be used with its Cyclops-7 Submersible Sensors as well as analog sensors from other manufacturers. Up to 9,999 records can be stored and downloaded to a PC. The DataBank has internal memory enabling unattended data logging at intervals from one second to four days. Sensor power is provided directly from the DataBank, eliminating the need to connect to external batteries. DataBank is designed for one-hand operation. The DataBank can be ordered already configured with a Turner Designs Cyclops-7 sensor or customers can configure the DataBank to work with
New Sensor Assembly, Installation Tool
BMT Scientific Marine Services has developed a sensor assembly and installation tool that is designed to permit strain sensors to be installed on an underwater pipeline using an ROV. Known as a Subsea Strain Sensor Assembly (SSSA), it is attached to a pipeline or riser in depths of up to 10,000 ft below sea level. Once secured onto the pipe, the sensor assembly measures static and dynamic tensile and bending strain and alerts offshore operators if the pipe is likely to be strained excessively or to suffer fatigue damage in future. A key feature of the ROV Deployable package is the stable support frame for the sensor package. Before installation starts, a support frame is clamped to the riser by the ROV to provide an anchor for the ROV, and to ensure that the sensors can be fitted or adjusted without causing any damage to them.
