Queen's Award for IHC Engineering
IHC Engineering Business (EB) of Riding Mill in Northumberland received news that a Queen's Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category is to be conferred on its business. "We are extremely proud to receive the Queen's Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category. This is an award not just for the company but for every member of our innovative team," says Dr. Tony Trapp, EB's Managing Director. "EB is passionate about engineering and the innovative solutions we design for our clients in the offshore oil and gas, submarine telecom, marine defense and offshore renewable energy industries. Equally I am a passionate believer in the strength of the creative and talented team at EB; and - looking just slightly further afield - in the strength and resourcefulness of the North East supply chain that we make use of whenever possible." IHC Engineering Business has an order book of $80.3m for innovative and large pieces of equipment to be delivered to the offshore oil and gas industry alone over the course of the next two years. It is also busy with a number of offshore renewables projects; and there are other challenges already in the pipeline. They have been actively recruiting and now have 185 people working at the company, predominantly graduate professional engineers. "We have certainly come a long way since EB was founded by four of us, all engineers, 12 years ago in April 1997," said Trapp.

AXYS Provides Wave Monitoring Buoy to a Japanese Shipbuilder
Following a field evaluation in late 2008, AXYS has been awarded a contract from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) for the supply of a TRIAXYS Mini directional wave monitoring buoy. Wave data is a critical input in understanding and validating new ship performance. The rechargeable battery powered TRIAXYS is designed to deliver accurate directional wave data to support sea trials of MHI's newly launched ships at Nagasaki. TRIAXYS Mini weighs less than 60kg, which permits easy two-person
deployment and recovery operations from a small support boat. The buoy is equipped with a custom drogue mooring to minimize drift in the trial area, without impeding the buoy's wave following and measuring ability. Directional wave data is transmitted to MHI personnel on the ship's bridge via Iridium Short Burst Data (SBD) email, an AXYS-provided telemetry service. The initial trial and subsequent purchase was facilitated by AXYS' Agent in Japan, Nippon Kaiyo Co. Ltd. Additional training and support was provided in Japan by an AXYS Field Service Specialist in late March, 2009.
