Seismic Vessel Sports X-BOW
The seismic vessel WG Columbus, recently delivered to WesternGeco, has completed its maiden Atlantic crossing to her first assignment in the Gulf of Mexico. The Ulstein SX124 vessel was built at the Barreras shipyard in Vigo, Spain. There was positive feedback from the trial run earlier this year. "The shipowner was indeed happy that the ship could maintain a speed of 15 knots in 55-knot winds and 3- to 4-m-high waves," said Ulstein Design project manager Mikal Warholm. "Mick Richardson from WesternGeco reported that the ship sailed smoothly and steadily through rough weather." This is the first seismic vessel built with an Ulstein X-BOW. The vessel was to dock in Miami for adjustments in the seismic track steering in the DP system with the seismic equipment deployed at sea. This is part of the preliminary testing prior to the WG Columbus's first assignment in the Gulf of Mexico. In December 2007 WesternGeco purchased Eastern Echo, which then had four seismic vessels of Ulstein Design under construction at the Barreras yard in Spain, and an additional two Ulstein SX124 vessels at Drydocks World in Dubai. The WG Columbus was completed first, to be followed by the others later this year. WesternGeco has its head office in Houston, Texas.
