espite a seeming tsunami of bad financial news and indicators, there is a palpable enthusiasm sweeping the subsea industry, as evidenced by the recent Underwater
Intervention in New Orleans. While most everyone still gives a note of caution regarding the future, in an unscientific survey of business there was a near consensus of optimism, as subsea business stays strong in these uncertain economic times. In particular, the subsea vehicle manufacturers are riding a strong wave, as the demand for improved technology to complete a plethora of subsea operations -- from scientific endeavor to port and harbor security to commercial operations in the world's ever deeper water offshore oil and gas operations -- is driving development, consolidation and business in this arena. This being MTR's "ROV/AUV" annual, we present our traditional survey of new product and systems in this segment, with coverage starting on page 18. Also profiled in this edition is iRobot, an innovative robotics company which was recently named as one of Forbe's 25 Fastest Growing Technology Companies in America for 2009. Best known in the defense sector for its land-based IED detection and disposal devices, and also on the consumer markets for its robotic floor cleaning products, iRobot last year made a strong play into the subsea sector, and we spoke with Vice Admiral Joe Dyer, president of iRobot's Government & Industrial Division, who discussed the company's strategy. The story starts on page 30.
