On-Line Simulation Training
Modern small boat crews are called upon to do increasingly difficult tasks on vessels that are moving faster and faster. With the increase in speed comes an increase in risk; the risk of hitting rocks or colliding with another vessel should be everyone's primary concern. Virtual Marine Technology has developed an online trainer, called NetSim that allows students to improve their small vessel navigational skills before ever getting into an actual boat. Trainees work through tutorials from basic through advanced skill levels and learn how to operate specific navigational equipment such as a chart plotter, and radar. These can range from learning to turn on and operate a piece of equipment, to advanced scenarios that require the simultaneous use of several instruments in order to navigate along a safe path and avoid collisions. NetSim provides curriculum developed by Virtual Marine Technology such as online tutorials and reference materials that are available for students to log on and use at anytime. The web site learning management system tracks the personal progress of the members while they move through the materials. Quizzes, evaluations and test scenarios provides the individual learner will self paced accelerated program for highspeed navigation that can be completed during quiet periods, such as during the winter season. The foundation of the NetSim solution is accessibility. Our research and development is entirely focused towards providing training online so that students, regardless of their location, receive high quality instruction in the base technologies standard in modern navigation. NetSim can be launched from any standard web browser deployed on any operating system with no prior installation. This allows students and instructors alike to access their training from any PC connected to the internet. NetSim can greatly reduce training costs and minimize the level of risk for trainees when they do eventually commence full scale simulator training, live-boat training, or vessel operations. NetSim will be officially released on January 15, 2009.
