Ocean Technology Jobs Available Now
Anyone Want a Job?

If you are an engineer of almost any description, you are hired! And if you have submarine experience or oceanographic technical expertise you are also hired! Such was the mantra at the Ocean Technology Expo, held in Providence, RI, this past October. Exhibitors were provided with a briefing room and interview tables at which to meet and greet potential employees. Over 80 individuals attended the OTE just to attend the Friday Oct. 3 morning sessions. The sessions were filled with eager high school kids learning about what they need to study to be in the marine tech business; seniors from the URI school of ocean engineering, and students from UMass Dartmouth's School for Marine Science and Technology. Of course, there were also the mid-career folks looking for new opportunities. Representatives from McLaughlin Research Corp of Middletown, RI, requested resumes for people who could help them provide a full spectrum of services in systems design, environmental management, technical documentation, training and graphics support. Systems Engineering Associates Corp. (SEA CORP), based in Middletown, RI, specializes in systems engineering, software design and new product development. MIKEL of Fall River, MA, specializes in prototype development for underwater technologies, submarine combat systems, acoustic detection and more. They are looking for electrical, ocean and computer engineers with some experience with defense technology. The Woods Hole Group of Falmouth, MA, is an environmental consulting firm working in coastal, ocean, wetland and terrestrial settings. They are seeking candidates to fill technical support positions in their offshore oil and gas business sector as well as for their NOAA contracts. FarSounder, Inc. a marine electronics manufacturer of forward seeking sonar systems located in Warwick, RI, is seeking a software engineer who can design, develop, code, test, and support all of FarSounder's software systems. C&C Technologies, Inc. of Lafayette, LA, conducts subsea surveys for the offshore oil industry and is seeking engineers and technicians in support of its expanding services - which include the use of AUVs. The participating companies have listed their jobs on their respective web pages. In addition to the Friday briefing sessions, representawww.seadiscovery.com
tives from URI, UMass-Dartmouth and Bristol Community College were available to meet companies to learn first hand what their employee needs are now and into the future. Internships and co-op programs are available to industry and to the students. "The OTE was a great place to make those connections", said Jane Staples, UMass Dartmouth's Director of Engineering Co-op and Internships. The job fair was coordinated by the Marine and Oceanographic and Technology Network (MOTN) and the Rhode Island Economic Development Corp (RIEDC).
