New FSO Mooring System
A new mooring system from Trelleborg Harbor Marine is designed for safer operation and fuel consumption reduction. Retrofitted to the FSO vessel Basker Spirit, an innovative mooring system from Trelleborg Harbor Marine is helping to reduce fuel consumption, lowering overall operating costs for Teekay Shipping. This has been achieved with a design incorporating a unique chain stopper that secures the bow single point mooring chain, monitors chain tension and provides emergency release of the ship from its mooring, even if the chain is under tension. The crew can operate the unit at a safe distance away from the potentially dangerous chain. Teekay Shipping, owner and operator of FSO Basker Spirit, was finding that it needed to operate the thrusters on their ship for extended periods to keep it stationary over its mooring. This resulted in high fuel consumption. Trelleborg Harbor Marine worked with the client and its team of engineers. To meet specific safety and operational requirements unique to the project, a proven chain stopper design was customized. This involved the redesign of the mounting from the standard horizontal mounting to a vertical one, along with an increased level of remote operation for aligning and releasing the chain. The load monitoring system was also integrated into

the vessel's shut down system in case of mooring overload. The completed design incorporates mooring load monitoring and display at multiple locations on board the vessel with continuous load recordings, high load warning and remote release capability. All functionality is available from a dedicated workstation installed within the vessel's CCR (Cargo Control Room). After the ship's bow was modified, the vertical chain stopper was fitted to a geared hydraulic turntable. This design allowed the
