Phoenix Completes 40T Crane Installation
Phoenix International, Inc. (Phoenix) announced the completion of the installation of a 40-ton knuckle-boom crane on the M/V Kimberly Candies, a key element of the company's planned improvements to the vessel's subsea construction support capabilities. The new 40-ton crane gives the M/V Kimberly Candies the capability of overboarding and placing 36 short tons of material on the seafloor in 1,200 ft. of seawater (fsw) without the need of a winch. This ability complements onboard conventional diving services to 300 fsw, HardSuit atmospheric diving system (ADS) services to 1,200 fsw, and Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) services to 20,000 fsw. The comprehensive spread includes a variety of additional inspection and construction support equipment, and ideally configures the vessel for underwater inspection, maintenance, and repair of Gulf of Mexico oil & gas infrastructure in addition to offering light subsea

SCDP Launches Marine Science and Technology Cluster Study
The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative's John Adams Innovation Institute has contracted with the SouthCoast Development Partnership (SCDP) to characterize the marine science and technology cluster and to assess the need/feasibility for a marine science and technology association in Massachusetts. Academic institutions throughout New England anticipate a significant increase in federally funded research for marine science and technology. Massachusetts should strive to leverage economic growth from these R&D investments. The Partnership has assembled a team of professionals who will define ways to link businesses with marine research and education, to support business growth, and to increase jobs in the Commonwealth and the region. A goal is to create a business climate that encourages early stage companies and nurtures the growth and diversification of established ventures. This work builds on recommendations made in April 2005 when the University of Massachusetts' Donahue Institute published: The Marine Science and Technology Industry in New England. The project team will conduct market research to identify potential areas of growth, impediments to growth (whether they be financial, political or technical), and industry interest in an association devoted to marine science and technology. The team will be contacting key individuals in industry, government, academia and other related organizations to help establish priorities for the cluster and determine the merits of advancing an association.
