Portable Linear Mill
Climax Portable Machine Tools debuted the LM6000, a portable milling machine. The LM6000 is designed to handle demanding and difficult field machining conditions through features that ensure power, accuracy and precision. The LM6000 was developed to meet increasing market demand for a more aggressive and powerful portable milling machine that covers various work requirements. It is part of a lineup of mill options from Climax targeted to equipment repair applications involving milling of mounting surfaces. The LM6000 features main bed travel lengths (X-axis) from 48 in. (1219.2 mm) to 144 in (3657.6 mm); Ram assembly travel (Y-axis) of 24 in. (609.6 mm) or 36 in. (914.4 mm); Spindle assembly (Z-axis) travel in 4 or 8 in. (101.6 or 203.2 mm) and Hydraulic or Pneumatic power options; and feed rate of 0.4 to 20.0 in./minute (10.2 508.0 mm/minute).

battery models, a universal battery charger, battery analyzer, and a full line of accessories. The new grinders feature proprietary, microprocessorcontrolled protection. By continuously monitoring tool operation and motor temperature, the microprocessor warns the user by pulsing the motor on and off continuously if the tool begins to overheat. If the maximum temperature limit is reached, the microprocessor disables the tool until it cools to the optimum range. By ensuring the tool is always operating optimally, the protection feature prevents misuse, improves battery runtime, and drastically prolongs tool life. The 14.4-volt die grinders come in both straight (GS25) and right angle (GR25) configurations, each producing a maximum free speed of 27,500 rpm and 20,000 rpm respectively. In addition to speed, the new grinders also deliver excellent power. The optimized motors outperform most pneumatic grinders, delivering 0.35 horsepower to tackle even the toughest grinding applications.

15,000 psi Lance
A high-productivity water jet lance and foot control from NLB Corp. features a quick-change cartridge valve that an operator can replace in less than 60 seconds. They operate at pressures up to 15,000 psi (1,035 bar). The NLB NCG15-286 lance is designed to maximize operator comfort and protection. It weighs just 12 lbs. (5.5 kg), and has a one-finger latch to prevent accidental actuation. A light pull on the patented trigger (U.S. patent no. 5,636,789) initiates the water jet action, and a push forward immediately dumps the pressure. The shoulder stock and the hand grip are adjustable to suit the operator. NLB's latest foot control valve, the FC15-286, complements the new lance. It features a patented pedal design to force the valve into dump mode, if necessary, and handles flows up to 25 gpm (95 lpm). All wetted parts are made of stainless steel for durability, and the enclosure doubles as a handy carrying case.

ESAB, PLSystems Agree to Commercialize Hybrid Laser Welder
ESAB Welding & Cutting Products signed an agreement with PLSystems enabling ESAB to integrate PLSystems' patented closedloop control system into their mechanized laser welding systems. The agreement is the result of a four-year collaboration to develop and commercialize a hybrid laser welding system that combines the benefits of laser welding and GMAW. A key component of the system is the patented control that allows the system to monitor the weld joint in real time and modify the process to accommodate a joint mismatch. ESAB launched the HLx Series of laser welders in January 2006 and introduced the product to the industry at large at IMTS 2006 in September. The agreement allows ESAB to assemble and integrate PLSystems' control system with ESAB products for licensing and resale. The HLx Series is the first commercially available mechanized laser-welding systems utilizing features a closed-loop control that monitors and adapts the welding process faster than a human operator could, allowing travel speeds that would not be possible with conventional control systems. This technology is available as a robotic system, a portable tractor system or on a moving gantry. Hybrid Laser Arc Welding (HLAW) combines the deep weld penetration and low heat input associated with laser welding with the power efficiency and superior gap tolerance of GMAW to create a new welding alternative. The deep penetration and fast weld speeds of laser welding reduce heat infusion into the part and reduce the associated distortion that causes plates to buckle and warp, making fit-up unpredictable and often costly to repair. Adding GMAW in tandem with the laser, with the addition of a relatively modest amount of filler metal, creates a wider weld bead capable of bridging much larger weld gaps, up to four times as wide as conventional laser processes can handle. Adding GMAW to the welding mix also enhances a finished part's metallurgical stability and, with GMAW's slower cooling rates, produces welds with greater strength and less brittleness. This is especially beneficial for higher alloyed steels sensitive to hot cracking.
